This is an exceptional opportunity to admire an artist's copy of Andrea del Sarto's Annunciation, now located in the Palatine Gallery and originally intended for San Godenzo itself. In this exquisite depiction we invite you to explore every detail, admiring the artistry of Jacopo Chimenti, known as the Empoli. This fascinating painting was commissioned to replace the original inside the church of the company of St. Michael the Archangel, located not far from the thousand-year-old abbey that is the centerpiece of the town of San Godenzo. In 1785, the company was suppressed as a result of laws enacted by Grand Duke Peter Leopold, and the building was sold to the Visani family. They kept the painting in their home until the death of Sister Teresita, who donated it as a bequest to the congregation of Santa Marta. The congregation has kindly granted the painting temporarily to the municipality of San Godenzo so that everyone can enjoy this extraordinary work. The painting depicts the encounter between the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary at the moment when the angel announces to her the birth of Jesus. You will notice the delicacy of the strokes, the richness of the colors, and the mastery in the expression of emotions. The artist has skillfully captured the moment of Mary's awe and humility before the divine proclamation.
